Not content with that, Google decided to roll out the December OTA update, which was enough to ruin the operating system and its UI/UX in every way possible. Device crashing to recovery mode, Bluetooth not working, inconsistent network, screen timeout not working, system UI not responding, and missing Vibrate Mode icon are just some of its after-effects.
Unfortunately, this is proving to be a never-ending list with news bugs being added to it on a daily basis. As of now, various Pixel users have voiced their concerns that whenever they are getting a notification, their device’s screen goes nearly black, with just a small visible hole in the middle. This issue has started happening right after users had installed the December update.
It is looking like the blur effect when receiving a notification has instead turned into pitch-black. And the problems that one might face in such a situation don’t even need any documentation. But what needs immediate attention is how to rectify this issue at the earliest. Well, this is where this tutorial shall come in handy. In this guide, we will show you various methods to fix the Pixel black screen issue on receiving notifications in Android 12.
Fix Pixel Screen Goes Black on Receiving Notifications
Do note that there’s no universal fix as such. You will have to try out each of the below-mentioned workarounds and see which one works best in your favor. So with that in mind, let’s get started.
FIX 1: Try These Quick Tips
The below-mentioned tweaks are quite easy to execute but would only give you respite from this issue on a temporary basis. The duration of their effects varies, ranging from until the next notification arrives (point 1 and 2) all the way up to a day or even more (point 3). But since they hardly take a second or two to be performed, you could try them right away:
Swipe away the notification and the screen will be back to normal until the next notification.Lock and Unlock the device and the black screen would disappear until the next notification.Restart your device and the issue wouldn’t occur until a day or two (or even more).
FIX 2: Update Android System Webview
Many users were able to fix the Pixel black screen issue on receiving notifications in Android 12 after updating the Android System Webview app to the latest version. So head over to the Play Store and if you find a pending update to this app [direct link], then download and install it right away. Once done, reboot your device and then check if the issue is resolved or not.
FIX 3: Downgrade to November OTA
Since the issue was first reported after installing the December OTA, hence there are two different approaches you could take to rectify it. Either wait for the January 2022 update or downgrade to November 2021. While updating to the latest update would be a better approach, unfortunately, the said update is delayed and wouldn’t be available until the end of January (at the very least).
And not everyone would be able to use their device with this black screen issue for over a month. So in that case, you could opt for the downgrade process. But that would require an unlocked bootloader and a factory reset. if that’s well and good, then please check out our guide on How to Downgrade Pixel Devices via Android Flash Tool.
